Without getting all sappy on you, I have to quote The King's Speech, because you know what, I have a voice! I recognize of course, that not many people will care to read my opinions and thoughts of daily life or its events, nor my thoughts and reflections on the world around me. In fact, I've been told this on several occasions.
However, in September of 2008 (my first year of University) I was chosen to be one of 6 weekly Opinion Columnists for Laurier's student newspaper, The Cord. I quickly found that a column with my name on it was the solution to many of my problems. Feeling frustrated and completely invisible to the student body and the many accomplished students surrounding me on a day-to-day basis would melt away when I wrote. The greatest part was that my opinions and take on numerous subjects were printed and published in the paper for all to read. However the greatest part of all was yet to come, I got wonderful responses. People not only read my column but agreed with it, identified with my feelings. Even for those who did not necessarily agree with my opinion, allowed it to spark a dialogue between people all over campus and the community.
As we are well into the summer months, I have gone weeks without the freeing feeling I get from writing, and have not been able to educate or inspire. While my place at the paper has dramatically changed as I now am Editor-at-Large of Blueprint Magazine, I still wanted a place where I could write on a daily basis about all things Devon. Okay I'm not going to use this as a space to vent about my feelings (I have a journal for that) I'm going to reflect on my travels, ideas, and take on fashion, politics, popular culture and media.
So visit Daily Devon frequently, a place to read up on the latest events, to engage in intellectual debates but also to read the works of a struggling student trying to make her voice heard.
